Technical subjects are where JE papers are won or lost. The mistake most aspirants make is treating them as memory subjects. They are application subjects: a limited set of concepts asked in a large number of disguises.
Learn the concept, then the formula — never the reverse
For every formula you write down, be able to state in one sentence what it physically means and when it fails. A candidate who understands why effective stress governs soil behaviour will answer an unfamiliar question correctly; a candidate who memorised the expression will not.
Strength of Materials and Structural Analysis
- Master sign conventions and free-body diagrams before anything else.
- Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams until they are automatic.
- Practise indeterminate structures by one consistent method rather than sampling every method.
Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering
- Keep the phase relationships and index properties at instant recall.
- Understand consolidation and shear strength conceptually — they generate the majority of numericals.
- Link laboratory tests to the field problem each one solves.
Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics
- Continuity, energy and momentum equations solve most standard problems.
- Be careful with units and with gauge versus absolute pressure.
- Practise open-channel and pipe-flow numericals under timed conditions.
Surveying, Transportation, Environmental and Estimating
These subjects are factual and highly scoring. Prepare them from condensed notes, revise on a two-week cycle, and practise the small set of standard calculations that repeat — curve setting, pavement thickness, population forecasting, and quantity estimation.
The weekly routine that works
- Two new topics per week, studied with derivations.
- Daily numerical practice from those topics.
- One cumulative subject test each weekend.
- Sunday evening: formula register revision and error-log review.
